The Financial Planner (Singapore)

The Financial Planner

Who am I?

Hi, my name is Chengkok and I’m a Financial Planner. My passion is to help people retire early and also avoid financial pitfalls through value investing and insurance.

My story

Coming from a humble family, I realized the importance of money and saving for rainy days at a young age. I remember the days I looked in envy when my friends ate McDonald while I had to eat at the coffee shop. I also have to give tuition to pay my own expenses.

Over the years, I realized that many Singaporean either are not saving enough, taking too much risks or not being adequately insured. This results in them not being able to retire early, lose their hard earned money or becoming a financial burden to their families. One event that is craved in my memory is of a friend who lost over USD$30,000 in the stock market in my National Service days. In those days with barely SGD$2000 in my bank account, I can still vividly recall the painful cry and the 5 words.

“Can you lend me money?”

I sincerely hope that you will never receive a call like that.

I have also met a friend whom goes for regular surgery because of a tumor in his brain. Although he is very cheerful, each surgery drains him of his energy and also his money. Each surgery cost at least SGD$50,000 according to last estimate.

“Do you want to spend your hard earn annual income on surgeries?”

The turning point

These 2 friends were the ones who inspired me to want to help others so that they won’t have to live their lives like them. Ever since then, he has been talking to people about financial planning (singapore) and how to not lose money.

As a result, I’m went to train under the Buffett Family and Singapore Buffetologist Sean Seah. I then became a trainer and core researcher at Value Investing College. I have been invited on 93.8FM, interviewed by Mindef  and is a co-author of the book Secrets of Value Investing.  As a hobby, I’m also the immediate past President of AIA Toastmasters Club, one of the top clubs worldwide. There, I led a team of dedicated members to coach managers and consultants to become confident presenters, expert communicators and skillful influencers. I’m also an award winning speaker in toastmasters.
